About Key Biscayne, Miami

Key Biscayneis one of Miami’s most desirable communities for residents seeking the relaxed island lifestyle. It is surrounded by the waterways of Biscayne Bay and the Atlantic Ocean. The municipality contains five public parks, 30 acres of beach, a musical theater, international tennis center, and three marinas. Key Biscayne is known to be one of the nation’s top five permanent vacation spots.

Many tri-athletes like to train on the island because it is conducive to swimming, running, and bicycling. Other popular sports are Kayaking, Kite surfing, sailing, fishing, diving, golf and tennis.

Key Biscayne, Miami History

Ponce De Leondiscovered Key Biscayne in 1513, named it Santa Marta and claimed it for the Spanish king. In 1825 the first lighthouse was built on the most southern point of the island. Seminole Indians burned it down in a dispute with the U.S. over its presence in the area, but it was rebuilt in 1856.

In 1940 the Matheson family controlled most of the land on the key. The family negotiated a deal with Dade County and donated over 800 acres of land for a park (Crandon Park) in exchange for a bridge and causeway to be built. The remaining middle part of the key was sold off to developers. In 1951 new homes were offered for $10,000 with only $500 down.

The Island was incorporated as a new municipality in 1991. New development in the form of hotels and condos were being built around the same time.
